This is a tour of downtown Newport, focused on the waterfront. It can be run standalone or as part of a longer run combining our other nearby Newport routes. This run has shorter and longer options.
The main run is along Washington St. Starting at Long Wharf, it’s 1 mile north to Battery Park at the Newport Bridge. There are nice views of the water and the many boats, in season. Retrace your steps, taking the short bridge to Goat Island at Storer Park. This ~1 mile loop doesn’t go all the way around the island, but focuses on the waterfront section to the lighthouse. Return to Bowen Wharf. This is the 3.3 mile (5k) mark.
Longer Run: This adds up to 4.8 miles out & back. Continue south on America’s Cup Dr. briefly, then LEFT on Memorial Blvd. It’s a wide street with a good sidewalk. There’s a 1 mile section, including a hill, that’s not as scenic, but then your reward is an 0.6 mile jaunt along Easton Beach (First Beach), with great water views. For even more scenic waterfront running, RIGHT on Esplanade Ave. and continue for another 0.7 miles to the end. Retrace your steps back to the start.
Add-Ons. The Cliff Walk begins at Easton Beach. See also our Newport Grand Tour, which includes parts of this route.
