A run along Bellevue Ave. in Newport is a memorable experience. This street is lined with spectacular estates (‘summer cottages’) built between the 1850s and 1920s by some of the nation’s wealthiest families. The homes on the east side face the ocean, and their lawns spill into the Cliff Walk. Today, only a few of these estates are privately owned — they’ve been turned into museums with tours available, or are part of Salve Regina University. Run Bellevue Ave. standalone (4.4 miles out & back) or combine with sections of the Cliff Walk for a fun loop.
Running along Bellevue Ave. is lovely. The gas lamp lit street is lined with gorgeous old trees, and there are great views of the historic estates (many with spectacular landscaping and specimen trees). There are interpretive signs along the way describing the homes, and some lovely open spaces. It’s 2.2 miles between Memorial Blvd. and Coggeshall Ave./Ocean Ave. The Olmsted firm designed some the landscaping of some of the homes. Notes: The sidewalk is not paved and can be uneven. It’s also a great shade option on a hot day.
Add-Ons & Variations. At the southern end of Bellevue Ave., connect to our Ocean Ave. waterfront run and the southern end of the Cliff Walk (note: this southern section of the Cliff Walk is the most rugged). Can also do a loop incorporating the Cliff Walk: the roads connecting Bellevue Ave. to the Cliff Walk are at the northern half, which is the part with easier footing.
