Ocean Ave. is a famous coastal drive in Newport. The road runs along the water, with great views of Rhode Island Sound on one side, and some spectacular coastal homes on the other. The road runs between Bellevue Ave. (near the the southern terminus of the Cliff Walk) and Castle Hill. It’s 4.5 miles, with ocean views the whole way, except the 0.3 miles in the Castle Hill area. Notes: Ocean Ave. has a very narrow shoulder or no shoulder most of the way, but cars are generally respectful. Also, no parking at the Bellevue end.
Good places to start this run are where there’s parking: at Castle Hill, or at Brenton Point State Park (restrooms, parking). If you’re running in the afternoon/evening, the sun will be at your back headed south.
Add-Ons & Variations. At Castle Hill, an extra jaunt up to a lighthouse (more of a trail). At the southern end of Ocean Ave., see our routes along Bellevue Ave., the Cliff Walk, and our 12-mile ‘Newport Spectacular‘ route combining Ocean Ave., Bellevue, and central Newport.
