Doing a loop around the Sachuest Point National Wildlife Refuge is one of the most scenic off-road runs in the Newport area. The Refuge sits at the southeastern tip of Aquidneck Island, overlooking Block Island Sound. There are 2.5 miles of trails, with beautiful views of the water and wilder beaches and dunes. It’s also a popular birding area, as it’s a destination for winter migratory birds. Notes: Admission & parking and free. There’s a Visitor Center and restrooms. There might be seasonal trail closures for the piping plovers.
A loop of the two main trails — Ocean View and Flint — is 2.5 miles. There are good views the whole way. The trail surface is a firm sand, though it can be looser at times. TRAIL MAP
Add-Ons: Sachuest Point Rd., which leads to the Refuge, is a quiet, pretty road. It’s 1/2 mile. It leads to Second Beach, a 1/2 mile beach that can be runnable. At the Second Beach Campground, you can also take a right to Third Beach, which is also runnable (1 mile length).
