Run to Michigan! LaSalle Trail/Indiana-Michigan River Valley Trail

Google Street View

Outside the trails along the St. Joseph River, the LaSalle Trail is the other major off-road running option in South Bend. The paved multi-use path runs for 6.4 miles from South Bend to Niles, Michigan, with the northern 3 miles referred to as the Indiana-Michigan River Valley Trail. It’s not especially scenic, but is a good opportunity to clock in some easy, fairly flat miles.

The LaSalle trail starts at Dublin & Douglas roads, at St. Mary’s College. Head north, as the trail  mainly passes through residential communities, paralleling BUS 31. At the 3.5 mile mark is the Michigan border, where the trail turns into the Indiana-Michigan River Valley Trail, continuing north for another 3 miles to the Pulaski Highway in Miles.

Add-Ons: St. Patrick’s Park is a nice green space with some additional trails. It’s @ the ~3 mile mark near the state line. Also, Saint Josephs Lake/University of Notre Dame campus is 0.6 miles from the Dublin Rd. start of the LaSalle Trail.
