Running or walking along an oceanside boardwalk is a classic summer pastime. These promenades are generally dedicated paths along the water, often with restaurants, bars, shops, and amusements. The true classics are those dating back to the early 20th century, mainly in New York and New Jersey. In Europe, some of what we call boardwalks are ‘promenades’. This list is a few of our favorites — and generally different than an oceanside road/sidewalk/bikepath. This list is not in order of ‘best’, but more sorted by geography.
The Jersey Shore is famous for its boardwalks, and the longer ones are great for running. Great ocean views, people watching, and entertainment. Our favorites: Atlantic City, Wildwood, Avalon to Belmar, and Seaside. Might have to dodge the crowds in summer.
