Digby: Shoreline and Rail Trail

Wikimedia Commons: Aconcagua

Digby, known as the scallop capital of the world, is a pretty spot on the western side of the Annapolis Basin, near the entrance to the Bay of Fundy. It’s also the location of a ferry to Saint John, NB. There are two good running options in Digby:

Shoreline Route. Run along the western shore of the Annapolis Basin to the Digby Gut, which connects to the Bay of Fundy. Start in the center of Digby and run along the shoreline (Water St. Raquette Rd.) for 2 km. Continue following the water along Shore Rd. for a total of 6.5 km to the end, where there are great views of the Bay of Fundy and the New Brunswick coast. Water views most of the way! Note: hilly, and no shoulder on Shore Rd. (but not too much traffic).

You can also add a couple of km by exploring some of central Digby’s streets, which feature some attractive seacoast homes and a small commercial area.

Digby County Rail Trail: A good opportunity for a long off-road run along this unpaved trail that runs for several km in either direction of Digby. Our preferred section is the 10 km from Digby north to Bear River. It’s a great alternative to running on the road. The terrain varies, from water views to woodland sections to some more open farm terrain. It’s 5 km to Joggin Bridge (!) and 7 km to Smiths Cove. From Digby, the trail heads inland for many km, through an sparsely populated area of woods and farms. Note: The trail is fairly hilly — not steep, but lots of up and downs.

If you take the ferry to Saint John, it’s a 2 hour crossing. See our running guide to Saint John!
