The Tammany Trace Trail is a good running option connecting NOLA’s northern suburbs. The paved multi-use path is located on the north side of Lake Pontchartrain, just across the causeway from New Orleans. It was the first rail trail in Louisiana! It’s mainly wooded, with some residential sections.

Runners can follow this paved walkway for 31 miles between Covington, Abita Springs, Mandeville, Lacombe, and Slidell. The best access points from New Orleans are in Slidell, via the Maestri Bridge across the lake, or in Mandeville, near the Lake Pontchartrain Causeway. NOTE: Our route map only shows the 28 miles from Camp Salmen Nature Park to Covington. See the TRAIL MAP for the extension along the road to Heritage Park in Slidell, plus segment distances.
