The Tammany Trace Bike Trail begins on the north banks of Lake Pontchartrain, just across the causeway from New Orleans. It was the first rail trail in Louisiana, and today it plays an important role in connecting NOLA’s northern suburbs. Runners can follow this paved walkway for 31 miles between Covington, Abita Springs, Mandeville, Lacombe, and Slidell. The closest trailhead to the city is Heritage Park in Slidell.
