One of the most famous ‘runs’ in New England. This 3.5 mile route is famously known as a public access walk that combines the natural beauty of the Newport shoreline with the architectural history of Newport’s gilded age. This cliffside walk goes above the ocean, with the water on one side and views to Newport’s historic mansions on the other. The views are wonderful. The path is mainly paved and somewhat narrow, and there are a couple of sections of hills, stairs, and short tunnels. The northern 2/3 are easy to moderate, and the southern 1/3 is more challenging, with some rocks to navigate. PRO TIP: See 100,000+ daffodils across Memorial Blvd. at the northern end of the Cliff Walk and along the trail @ Salve Regina University.
The northern end (and the most accessible parking) is off Memorial Blvd. at Easton’s Beach. The southern end is at Bellevue Ave. (no parking). There’s some paid parking (in season) on side streets between Bellevue Ave. and the Cliff Walk. There are five unique segments to Cliff Walk: Memorial Blvd. to Forty Steps, Forty Steps to Ruggles Ave, Ruggles Ave to Belmont Beach, Belmont Beach to Ledge Road, and Ledge Road to Bellevue Ave.
Loop Options: It’s fun to do a a loop of Cliff Walk one way and Bellevue Ave. the other way.
Add-Ons: At the northern end, add with running on Easton’s Beach or our Newport Waterfront route. At the southern end, add with our Bellevue Ave. or Ocean Ave. routes,
NOTE: Be wary that the sections are not always easy to run. The path is narrow and it can get very crowded. Best to go early in the morning if you want to really ‘run’ it.
