This is a fabulous run in northeast Charlotte, combining the University of North Carolina Charlotte (UNCC) campus with area trails. We’ve put together a 10k route that includes attractive campus, botanical gardens, a running track, and sections of several area multi-use trails. There are good options for a shorter or longer run.
The first section is around the UNCC campus, home to 30,000 students. Start at the UNCC light rail station. Run along the main ‘mall’ headed south. It’s an attractive campus, with a mix of architectural styles and an excellent network of brick-surfaced pedestrian walkways. At 0.5 miles, head east for 0.3 miles, passing the Watkins Library, and crossing Alexander Rd. into the Botanical Garden. This is a lovely arboretum/garden, with a couple of miles of wood-chipped trails. A loop is ~0.6 miles.
Exit the Garden and head east for 0.5 miles, passing Belk Plaza and the West Quad fields. Cross Cameron Blvd. into the athletic complex, which features an excellent running track. Continue east on the UNCC Fitness trail toward the University Place complex, which features hotels, restaurants, and a nearly 1 mile loop around an artificial pond. For the final section of the run, cross Clay Blvd. onto the Barton Creek Greenway. Head north for 0.6 miles, then EAST along the Mallard Creek Greenway for 0.7 miles to where it intersects with the Clarks Creek Greenway, which will take you for the final 0.5 miles south back to campus (the greenway continues south for another 2.3 miles).
Add-Ons: See our nearby route featuring the Mallard Creek Greenway, Clarks Creek Greenway, & Toby Creek Greenway.
