Located 10 km east of Faro, Olhão is a small town with a pleasant waterfront and marina. From Olhão, there are ferries to Ilha da Culatra, which has a lovely beach and walking trails. We have three recommended running routes in this area:
Waterfront and Old Town Tour. It’s a decent 5 km out and back starting on the pedestrian Rio do Commercio through the old town, then along the waterfront promenade (Jardim Pescador Olhanense), and around the marina just to the east. For a longer run, combine with Ria Formosa Natural Park Nature Discovery Trail below, which is 1 km east of the marina (not so nice getting there). ROUTE MAP
Ria Formosa Natural Park Nature Discovery Trail. 3 km loop. Lovely gravel and boardwalk trail at Marim Environmental Education Centre, the park’s headquarters. More info (p.27). It’s ~1 km east of the marina.
