Asheville is an idyllic college town, and runners can benefit from the miles of trails around Warren Wilson College in Swannanoa, just 15 minutes from downtown. This small, liberal arts school specializes in farm and agricultural programs.
There are myriad running options here, but runners love the 5 mile out and back River Trail through meadows and farmland behind the college. On a hot day, there are plenty of spots for a dip along the river. The best place to access the trail is Owen Park, off Warren Wilson Road.
Add-on/Variation: Take a quick jaunt around the campus of Warren Wilson College. There’s a path just east of Warren Wilson Rd. leading to the campus. Don’t miss running over the 1/2 mile Bridge! There are also miles of additional trails in the area. See the trail map for additional options.
The roads around this area are also pleasant for running, but note there is no sidewalk or shoulder.
