Jimbaran and Uluwatu

Wikimedia Commons

The fishing towns and coastal resorts of Jimbaran and Uluwatu offer some excellent running options near the airport and south of Kuta. Our recommentations:

Jimbaran Beach. Excellent beach for running. It’s ~4 km (2.5 miles) from the southern point at Pantai Muaya near Le Méridien, north to Kelan Beach (which is close to the airport). Lots of popular seafood restaurants dot the beach.  Tide Chart.

Road Running. There are some quieter roads in the area that are good for hill running. One good route is to run the nearly 3 km one-way between Tegal Wangi Beach and Abi Bali Resort, using Jl. Tegal Wangi & Jl. Karang Mas, which rises 210 feet and has a couple of steeper sections. Note there’s no shoulder. ROUTE MAP

Another good option is to run on some of the side roads/paths off the main perimeter road in Uluwatu (Jl. Pantai Suluban/Jl. Raya Uluwatu Pecatu) — lush, jungle-like greenery.

GWK Culture Park. This themed, 150 acre park, about 5 km from Jimbaran Beach. Among its features is the 120m high Garuda Wisnu Kencana statue, designed to be one of the world’s largest and highest monumental statue in the world. The park has numerous paths, plazas, gardens, a pond, and commercial areas. There are numerous live shows throughout the day. This can make for a pleasant spot for a 4-5 km run, given the views, grounds, and off-road paths. Admission required. MAP of Grounds.
