Königswinter is a popular summer resort area located a few km south of Bonn. Just above the town, in an area between Heisterbacher Str. to the north and Ferdinand-Mülhens-Str. to the south, there are numerous paths, trails, and roads that make for some scenic, hilly running, with the hilltop Schloss Drachenburg (castle) as a star attraction.
One idea is to park near the tourist information center at the Oberweingartenweg car park. There’s a cog railway that goes to the Drachenfels mountain peak, with great views and castle ruins. From there is some nice running on hilly roads and trails. The area around Schloss Drachenburg (castle) has especially nice grounds.
For those who want a beautiful run, but a serious hill climb, start at Parkplatz Oberweingartenweg and run along the Oberweingartenweg path to Schloss Drachenburg, and then to the Drachenfels peak. It’s a 2.5 km, 200m climb.
For a flatter option, a good choice is Drachenfelsstraße, which runs east into the hiking area. There’s a nice number of trails here that are great for more challenging trail running.
