Brno ‘Runseeing’ Tour: Špilberk Castle, Lužánky Park, & More

Creative Commons:Millenium187

This is one of our favorite ‘runseeing’ tours in Europe. Explore the largely pedestrianized old town, Lužánky Park, the grounds of Špilberk Castle, and the hilltop Cathedral of St. Peter and Paul. Use our mapped route as a guide for your own exploration.

Start in the historic centre at Liberty Square. Do a loop using Masarykova-Josefská-Jánská to access Park Koliště, and run through it to the National Theatrelight fountain. Run through Park – nám. 28 října to Lužánky Park — the oldest park in the Czech Republic — and run in the steps of the world- known composer Leos Janacek. A loop of the park is ~1.5 km. Exit the park onto the central promenade path, then RIGHT through the paths of Masaryk University, to access the grounds of Špilberk Castle. Here, there are numerous hilly paths outside the walls of the medieval fortress. The park is free to explore but admission is required for the castle tour. A loop is ~2 km. Exit the southeastern end onto Husova, to then explore the area around the 13th-century Cathedral of St. Peter and Paul. Conclude the route back through old town, passing the Moravian Museum & Capuchin Crypt.

Add-Ons: Additional paths around Lužánky Park & Špilberk Castle. Also, just north of Špilberk Castle, there’s a running track and arboretum/botanical garden, with additional paths. Can also explore more streets in old town.
