Bottle Lake Forest Park

Flickr: TRAILSOURCE.COM

An extensive pine plantation runs along the coast in the northeast part of Christchurch. There are numerous forested trails, and a more open trail above the beach, with nice views. This is also a popular area for mountain biking, so it’s best to stick to the dedicated walking/running – colored blue and orange on the attached map (the green trails are forest roads). Note: this is a great spot for a run on a hot day, as the trails offer shade.

The attached MAP has suggested loops. The Blue Loop is 11.4 km, with an additional 4.7 km possible using the ‘Blue Coastal Track’. The orange-colored South Pegasus Bay Track is a shared coastal pathway, running along the coast for ~6 km between the Surf Club and Broad Park.

Essentials
  • Depends on trail chosen; Blue loop is 11.4 km (7 miles), Orange coastal track is up to 6 km one-way
  • Some rolling terrain
  • Blue and Green loops come off the Bottle Lake Forest car park
  • Car park off Waitikiri Dr. -- see trail map
