The Foothills Trail is a scenic trail run over 7.4 miles through the Pineridge, Maxwell and Reservoir Ridge natural areas in Fort Collins. The terrain is fairly open, with great views of the surrounding mountains and the Horsetooth Reservoir. Most of the 657 feet of elevation gain occurs between miles 1 & 2.

The south terminus is next to the Dixon Reservoir in the Maxwell Natural Area. The first 1 mile is flat, and mile 2 climbs 400 feet. After crossing S County Rd. 23 at mile 2, the trail runs along the Reservoir for ~2.5 miles, featuring some nice water views. At the 4.4 mile mark the trail leaves the Reservoir and goes through the Reservoir Ridge Natural Area. At the 6-mile mark, there’s an option to take the 0.4 mile Michaud Spur to Claymore Lake, or continue to the end @North Overland Trail.
