The Costa Cálida is the 250 km stretch of Mediterranean coast in the Murcia province of southwestern Spain. It stretches from the Mar Menor lagoon south to the port city of Águilas. The ‘warm coast’, known for its hot, sunny and dry climate, has some lovely beaches, but also numerous rocky coves. We’ve mapped out several excellent running routes, mainly featuring seafront promenades and easier coastal trails. We also cover the historic port city of Cartagena.
Working our way from north to south, there’s a lovely waterfront promenade from Los Cuarteros to Santiago de la Ribera, and the scenic Camino Quintin dyke path. In the La Manga spit area, our favored run is the loop around Cabo de Palos. Other terrific Costa Cálida waterfront promenade paths are located in Bolnuevo (plus an easier section of the GR-92) and Águilas. In the historic port city of Cartagena, we’ve put together an attractive ‘runseeing’ tour, as well as two routes to historic hilltop castles for those who want a challenge. For more in the area, see our Costa Blanca routes stretching north from San Pedro del Pinatar to Alicante, and our Murcia running guide.
Runner Notes: The Costa Cálida is known for its splendid weather (300 sunny days a year), but summers are very warm. Also, the terrain in the interior is rugged and hilly and the summer temps hotter.
