Da Nang and Hoi An, Vietnam

The Best Places to Run in Da Nang and Nearby Hoi An and Hue

Fifth largest city in Vietnam and an important port city, Da Nang lies on the coast of the East Sea at the mouth of the Han River. It’s busy, bustling, and scenic, ringed by mountains and the sea. Da Nang is a popular visitor destination, and often part of a trip that includes Hoi An and Hue. Like other places in Vietnam, it’s best to choose specific spots for running in Da Nang. This guide also includes some scenic places to run in Hoi An and Hue. Note: the climate here is very hot and humid — be sure to hydrate and use caution.

The best places to run in Da Nang are along the 30 km long My Khe beach, paths around Da Nang Bay and along the Hàn River, and the quieter, hilly roads and paths of the Son Tra Peninsula. In nearby Hoi An, there’s excellent running on the beach and out to a lighthouse, and some decent roads/paths along the Thu Bon River and out to Cẩm Kim island.

The hot, humid, monsoonal climate is a major factor influencing running in the Da Nang area. The months April through October are brutally hot for running, with highs averaging 34C (94F) at the height of summer, with high humidity. Nights stay hot, not dropping below 25C (77F) much of the year. It’s a little more tolerable in winter, with high temperatures in the 25-26C (high 70s) range. There are also distinct wet and dry seasons. From September through November, there are heavy, monsoonal downpours — you will get rained on! But there’s hardly any rain from January through April.

Da Nang is a busy business and visitor center, so there’s a huge selection of accommodation. For running, if you want to go out your doorstep, we recommend staying near My Khe Beach, such as in My An, which enables access to the promenade path. There are also nice hotels and good running along Da Nang Bay.

There’s a good selection of centrally located stores where you can buy shoes and other running gear in both Da Nang and Hoi An. See our overview map for locations.

You can connect with the Da Nang Runners Club for some group runs.

The signature running event in Da Nang is the Manulife Marathon, held in August.
