Features:
One of the most scenic drives on the Hawaiian Islands is also a scenic spot for running. It’s 7.5 miles from Hanauma Bay to Waimanalo along the Kalanianaole Highway, with a volcanic crater on one side and the Pacific Ocean on the other. NOTE: It’s a major driving road with a fair number of speeding cars, but there is an adequate shoulder most of the way (some sections very narrow).
It’s fairly hilly, but not a killer. This is a long run to do out and back, but it can be done in sections. An especially scenic section is from the the Makapu‘u Lookout to Kaupō Beach Park, about 1.5 miles. Some key distances (m=miles), heading north from Hanauma Bay:
- Lanai Lookput: 1.5m
- Halona Blowhole Lookout: 1.8m
- Sunrise Beach: 3.0m
- Connection to Lighthouse Trail 4.2m
- Makapuu Lookout: 4.4m
- Kaupō Beach: 5.8m
- Waimanalo Beach Park: 7.7m
Essentials
- Up to 7.5 (12 km) miles one-way
- 750 feet
- Hanauma Bay or Waimanalo Beach
