Air Itam Dam

Wikimedia Commons: Chongkian

Air Itam Dam is one of the best spots for a scenic off-road run in Penang. Located 9 km west of George Town, the area is a green oasis, with numerous trails and quiet roads for hiking and running. The best bet for an easy, flat run is the 2.8 km paved loop around the dam. It’s quiet and green, with some water and mountain views. For a longer run, which can be done standalone or in combination with the perimeter loop, we recommend running to the Kek Lok Si Buddhist Temple. Use Jalan Balik Pulau to the Temple (downhill), then loop around to Dewa Tua Peh Kong, which is a vigorous uphill climb for 1.5 km.

There are restrooms and some facilities at the parking area.

  • Perimeter Loop: 96m (318 feet); Temple Loop: 210m (689 feet)
  • Public Parking Area
