Research Triangle Park refers to the area of the large research park designed around the lcities of Durham, Raleigh, and Chapel Hill, and three major research universities: Duke, NC State University and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. The center of the corporate RTP area is “The Frontier”, 7 miles west of the airport and off I-40, location of many corporate offices.
There has been a big attempt to design a series of biking and walking/running trails in the area: some 7,000 acres of “RTPFit” trails. There are 18 miles of well-marked, paved, purpose-built running jogging trails, near the Frontier and RTP Headquarters. There are loops of multiple lengths — one can easily do 5-7 miles of off-road running in this area. See attached map for options. They are mainly wooded and have good shade for hot days.
There are 4 miles of separate mountain bike trails that can be used for trail running.
