For those looking for a longer off-road run, the cycle path between Monte Ciocci and Monte Mario (Percorso ciclo pedonabile Angelina Merlin) is a good option. This paved multi-use path rides above the rail line, connecting the scenic Monte Ciocci Park to Monte Mario, ending at the San Filippo Neri train station. There’s also a new path that connects Monte Ciocci with the Roma San Pietro railway station.
Monte Ciocci to San Filippo Neri. Start at Monte Ciocci Park, which features a couple of km of paths, and panoramic views of St. Peter’s Basilica (pro tip: sunsets!). At the north end of the park, a paved multi-use path heads north for 5.5 km to the San Filippo Neri train station. It connects the following stations: Appiano Proba Petronia, Roma Balduina, Gemelli, Roma Monte Mario, and San Filippo Neri. There are separate paths for pedestrians and cyclists.
Monte Ciocci to Roma San Pietro. NEW! This new multi-use path connects Monte Ciocci Park and the Roma San Pietro Railway Station. Opened in April 2025, the path repurposes an old railway, featuring a viaduct and a tunnel beneath the Pontifical Minor Roman Seminary, offering a unique running experience. The route also links to the Via Francigena walking/cycling path, providing scenic views near the Vatican walls. It’s modeled somewhat after New York City’s High Line. Note: There is not an available digital map yet.
