Belmont Regional Park

Neil Shanks

Belmont Regional Park, located 20 km north of Wellington city centre, is a great spot for a destination run. Located in the hill country between Porirua and the Hutt Valley, the 8,600 acre park features 10 well-signed trails (“tracks”), with something for all abilities. The terrain includes open farmland, wooded trails, and some rolling hills. Note this is a popular area for mountain biking, so please be aware. Some trails are bike only, others are shared. There are numerous entrances. Trail info here.  A few recommendations:

  • Puke Ariki / Haywards Korokoro Traverse. Choose a section of this 21.6 km trail that runs the length of the park. A challenging trail run through open grass pastures and farmland, woods, and steep hillside, but on a decent 4WD surface.

  • Belmont Trig Track. Combination open and wooded trail, with 360-degree views from the Tararua Ranges all the way to the Kaikōura Ranges. 2.3 km out and back, 40m gain.

  • Waterfall Walks. Several that are good for running, notably the Korokoro Dam Loop.
