For another pretty run near Sandusky, we recommend the area around the Sheldon Marsh State Nature Preserve and Sawmill Creek. The 472-acre preserve has 2 miles of trails with views to wetlands, and is an attractive birding area. Enjoy running the trails or the 1-mile main road, with nice wetland views. Especially pretty in fall!  Then, head east for 0.3 miles along Highway 6 (runnable), turning LEFT on Sawmill Creek Dr. This 1-mile park-like road runs along a golf course for part and has a separated, lit path passing by nice homes. Overall, this is a ~4 mile run.

Add-Ons & Longer Options:

  • From a GR user: You can also run the barrier beach at the end of the paved path by the NASA pump station to add a few more miles. There’s usually a flat part of sand with solid footing. You can also avoid Cleveland Rd/Rt 6 if you want to head into Sawmill Creek and down to Mariner Village Marina. Look to the left where cars exit the Sheldon parking lot, and you’ll see an opening. You’ll be on a paved road that hugs the golf course, and you can turn left at the end to access the resort property.
  • You can combine this with Cedar Point Rd. and Osborn Park, which are 1.5 miles east of the Preserve along Highway 6. It’s a busy road but has a decent shoulder.
