There’s a nice network of relatively low-trafficked roads in South Dartmouth. It’s a scenic mix of water views and farmland. We’ve mapped a 7.5 mile run showcasing Gulf Rd. and Smiths Neck Rd. The highlight is the bridge over Apponagansett Bay. There are good options to make the route shorter or longer. Note: these roads lack a shoulder/sidewalk.
Start in the attractive center of South Dartmouth. Take Prospect St., then LEFT in Water St. to Gulf Rd. Run for 0.4 miles over the scenic bridge (good sidewalk). There are great water views here. LEFT on Smith Neck Rd. for 1.6 miles, enjoying some nice bay views and then pleasant farmland and nice homes. [SHORTER OPTION: Turn around at Nonquitt Ave. and retrace your steps for a 5-mile route.] The next section is a 2.8 mile loop on small roads in Nonquitt. Use Nonquitt Ave.-King Phillip St., then LEFT on South, and RIGHT on Smith Neck Rd. to complete the loop., then retrace the first 2.3 miles of the route, but use W Smith Neck Rd. as a variation.
Add-Ons: Other quiet back roads in the area. Note: Avoid Horseneck Rd. in summer — it’s very busy with traffic headed to Horseneck Beach.
