Spencer Butte

Rick Obst

Spencer Butte, a 2,000 foot mountain towering over downtown Eugene and the Willamette Valley, is one of the city’s most prized outdoor spaces. It’s popular for hiking, mountain biking, and trail running. , The view from the top of the treeless butte is extraordinary, and there are several different options for arriving at the summit. Perhaps the best running option is the “Main Trail” from Spencer Butte Trailhead, which is rolling for the first 0.6 mile, then a steepish 0.5 mile climb. Other options include a 2.5 mile (one-way) route from the 52nd and Willamette Trailhead and a 2.1 mile (one-way) route from the Fox Hollow Trailhead.

The attached trail map (also known as the Ridgeline Trail) has information about the multitude of trails in this area — focus on those that are easy/moderate as appropriate for trail running.
