Circonvallazione a Monte

Wikimedia Commons

There are lots of ways to ‘sightrun’ in Genoa and enjoy the challenge of hilly streets rising from the water. One way to get an overview, without too many twists and turns, is to run along Circonvallazione a Monte — this is a promenade along the upper ring road from D’Albertis Castle to Manin. Start at Giardini Eugenio Montale, near the Castle. Run along Corso Firenze, heading east. Pass Giardino Di Pubblico Asservimento, Giardini Achille Pellizzari. After 2 km, becomes Corso Niccolò Paganini. At the Piazza Sant’ Anna, becomes Corso Magenta, passing gardens and a public park. Then, Corso Solferino and Corso Armellini head toward Piazza Manin.

For a longer run, lots more to explore in the area — side streets, numerous stairs that come off the upper ring road, and paths through some of the small gardens and parks. On the return, one option for a minor variation is to take passing Albergo dei Poveri, and Botanical Gardens.
