Leeds Waterfront and River Aire Paths

Creative Commons: Alan Murray-Rust

There are two waterfront running options in Leeds: paths along the Leeds-Liverpool Canal and this route, which features the paths along the River Aire headed southeast of the city centre. We’ve mapped a route that is nearly 5 miles to Skelton Country Park. The path is well way-marked.

Start near the waterfront at Church Walk. A small bridge leads to the south side of the River Aire, where you’ll do a 1/2 mile loop of the Leeds Dock – a combination of industrial buildings and newer condos. Then, turn RIGHT to head south on the River Aire path. Run as long as you like, enjoying the flat gravel path and nice water views. Cross the A61. Cross to the north side of the river at the 2-mile mark in Knowsthorpe. Just past the 3-mile mark is Thwaite Watermill. At the 4.75 mile mark, you’ll reach Skelton Country Park. Here, you can turn around, enjoy the nice path around Skelton Lake, or continue on the river path.

Add-Ons/Longer Run: The river path continues south for many miles. You could continue for 2 miles to Woodlesford and take the train back to Leeds! Or, do the 1.5 mile loop around Skelton Lake and add-on with our route that includes Skelton Country Park, Rothwell Park and Temple Newsam for a grand loop.
