South Los Angeles has a relative paucity of good running options. So Magic Johnson Park, which underwent a major renovation in 2020-21, is a welcome addition to the running scene in the Willowbrook/Compton area of L.A. The 120-acre park features a community events center, a small lake, and walking trails. It’s fairly open terrain, nicely landscaped. An ‘inner loop’ of the park, which includes the lakeside path, is 1.3 miles. A loop of the outer perimeter is 1.7 miles. Note: Has set opening hours.

Just east of Magic Johnson Park, there’s a good running track at Centennial High School.

Longer Run: Compton Creek Path.  Just 0.4 miles east of Magic Johnson Park, a paved multi-use path runs along Compton Creek for 3 miles between West El Segundo Blvd. & West Greenleaf Blvd. This path won’t win any awards for scenery. The creek is narrow and mainly dry, the area has a bit of an industrial feel, and the path is not that well maintained. But it’s a good option for clocking some off-road miles.
