The section of the Marvin Braude Bike Path (Strand) trail between Santa Monica Beach and Venice Beach is one of the more well-known and pretty sections of this paved, 22-mile multi-use trail. Starting at Santa Monica Pier, the path runs right on the beach for 3.3 miles to Venice Beach, ending at Washington Blvd. It’s a festive scene, with lots of folks walking, running, and cycling. There are good views of the wide beach and the water. where the path turns inland.  In some sections, there are separate paths for pedestrians and cyclists. Note: Beach also runnable, depending on tides.

It’s 2 miles from the Santa Monica Pier to the Venice Beach boardwalk, scene of the famed Muscle Beach, outdoor basketball courts, and Venice Skatepark. At Venice Beach, the Marvin Braude path turns inland for ~3 miles, so it’s a good turnaround point.   TRAIL MAP WITH SEGMENT DISTANCES

ADD-ON: At Venice Beach, the Ocean Front Walk is a concrete boardwalk that is separate from the Strand path. It’s a scene, with shops, restaurants, and bars lining the boardwalk. It runs for 2 miles from South Park to Driftwood St., just past the Venice Fishing Pier (also a nice detour, 0.3 miles).  You can also run the paths along the canals at Venice Beach. Really pretty! At Santa Monica Pier, you can also access the verdant Palisades Park
