Saint John, New Brunswick

Harbour Passage Trail

The best running option in Saint John is the Harbour Passage Trail, a paved, red asphalt walkway along the working waterfront of the St. John River. There are lovely water views the whole way.

Short Option: Trail Only. 3.7 km Out and Back. The trail itself starts near Market Square, where a wooden boardwalk winds around to the end of Union Street and the trailhead. Runners can continue west past Fort La Tour to the trail’s end at Chesley Drive (1.7 km mark).

Longer Option: (8.2 km)  Our route continues another 1 km along Chesley Drive for great views of the Reversing Falls Bridge. From the bridge lookout, runners can see the Reversing Falls, a phenomenon in which Saint John’s high tides cause the river rapids to run backwards. (There is another viewpoint 1 km further if you go north on Douglas Ave, then LEFT on Fallsview Ave to the end). On the east end of the Harbour Passage Trail, runners can extend the route with a loop around the uptown area. Water Street/Lower Cove Loop, Sydney Street, and King Street are some of the best choices, and you’ll get a bonus hill climb coming up Sydney!

Essentials
  • Trail only: 3.7 km out and back; Long option is to 8.3 km (5.2 miles)
  • Longer Option: 67 meters (220 feet)
  • Market Square
  • King Street
