Pyynikki Nature Reserve

cc-by 2.5

Enjoy some lovely wooded running on wide trails in the Pyynikki Nature Reserve. It’s a lakeside forest in the western part of Tampere, just above the beaches of Pyhäjärvi Lake. There are scenic vista points and an observation tower. Pyynikki ridge is considered the highest gravel ridge in the world (160 meters above sea level). There are kiosks with maps.

It’s best to create your own route around the preserve. The trails are generally wide, with good footing. The landscape is mainly wooded, with large pine trees. One good option is the marked, 4 km nature trail that starts at the Observation Tower. Note: hilly.

Add-On: Combine with the paths along Pyhäjärvi Lake which run for ~3 km east to Tampere, passing through several parks. It’s just across Pyynikintie from the preserve.
