Parque Forestal de Valdebebas – Felipe VI is an 840-acre park in the district of Hortaleza in northeast Madrid. Built on a former landfill and opened in 2015, it’s the second-largest park in Madrid. Along with nearby Parque Juan Carlos I, it’s a good option for running near Madrid Airport. Even though it’s called a ‘Forest Park, with 310,000 trees and 317,000 shrubs, the landscape is fairly open & exposed (since the plantings are fairly recent).
For running, there are 32 km of trails and 5 km of cycling lanes. There are a couple of lagoons and some features that add elevation & hills, making for some nice lookouts. This trail map shows several marked loops. A favorite running option is the 5 km Senda de los Montes trail, which follows the outer perimeter of the park (purple trail on the map). Another highlight is the 1 km straight shot on a wide path that runs east-west between the Fuente de los Sapos (fountain) and the Philip VI Viewpoint.
