Features:
The Belgian countryside is historic, pastoral, and great for running. There is an extensive series of paths passing by castles, through woodlands, along the coast, and by farms and fields. There are also some interesting historic routes around WWI battlefields, notably Flanders Fields in the Westhoek district. Some of our running recommendations for the area:
Groene 62 Bike Route (20 km west of Bruges). This 20 km bike path between Tourhout and Ostend follows a former rail bed and passes by pleasant farmlands and fields. MAP.
Stalhille. Charming village 12 km west of Bruges. Pleasant running here, including the Vaartdijk-Noord/Vaartdijk-Suid (south) canal path that runs from Bruges to Ostend.
Flanders Fields. Numerous important sites related to one of the more well-known, and horrible battles of WWI. Centered in the Westhoek district and in the Ypres area. Best to get some local maps & info. Information.
Oostkerke. 12 km northeast of Bruges. Pleasant pastoral running here. Beautiful path along the poplar lined paths of Damse Vaart-Noord and Schipdonkvaart-West that run from Oostkerke north to the coast. MAP
