Located in the Piedmont region of North Carolina, Winston-Salem is known for its history in the tobacco industry and also as a college town. The downtown area has undergone a revitalization in recent years. There’s a nice variety of running options in Winston-Salem. Use the Salem Creek Greenway as the anchor for running in Winston-Sale, as it runs through Old Salem and connects to the Salem Lake Trail. The best neighborhood running in Winston-Salem is the area around the Reynolda Historic District and Wake Forest University. North of town, we recommend Historic Bethabara Park and the Muddy Creek Greenway, while south of town in Clemmons, there’s good running in the area around Tanglewood Park.

Salem Creek Greenway

Winston-Salem, NC

The Salem Creek Greenway is the best bet for a centrally located off-road run in Winston-Salem. The paved multi-use path runs for 4.5 miles between Washington Park and Salem Lake. Numerous connections to other path and routes.

Salem Lake Trail

Winston-Salem, NC

The Salem Lake Trail is one of the most popular spots for a run in the Winston-Salem area. The mostly dirt path in Salem Lake Park loops around the lake for a total distance of 7 miles. Some water views and wooded sections.

Historic Bethabara Park

Winston-Salem, NC

Historic park preserving the history of the first European settlement is a great spot for a visit and a run. Take a 'running tour' of the park's grounds, run the 2.7-mile Bethabara Greenway, the 2.3-mile Mill Creek Loop, and the 1.8 mile Woodland Loop

Muddy Creek Greenway

Winston-Salem, NC

Paved multi-use path in the Brookberry Farm area about 8 miles west of downtown. The path is 3 mile one-way from just north of Robinhood Rd., south to Country Club Rd. Additional small paths and streets in area also good for running.

Tanglewood Park

Winston-Salem, NC

Located in the Clemmons neighborhood south of downtown, this 1,000 acre park is a great spot for a run. Highlights are the 1.75 mile multi-use path, or the more rugged mountain bike trails. Adjacent neighborhoods also good for running.

Winston-Salem has a humid-subtropical climate with hot, humid summers and mild to cool winters. Runners should be aware of summer heat, with daytime temperatures in the high 80s (31C) and warm nights. In winter, daytime highs approach 50F (10C), with nights dipping to freezing. Snow and ice are rare. Winston-Salem is particularly lovely for running in the spring, when temps are warm and the azaleas are blooming. Warm weather extends well into the fall. The 45 inches of annual precipitation is spread throughout the year, though more in the form of downpours in summer.
