Trondheim Grand Tour: Historic Centre, River Paths, Festningsparken

Google Street View

This run is a great way to get oriented in Trondheim. Enjoy the streets of the historic centre, a loop around the hilly Festningsparken fortress park, and some paths along the Nidelva River. Good options to add on. Festningsparken is the site of a weekly parkrun.

Start in downtown Trondheim, with a jaunt down the largely pedestrianized Nordre gate — one of the city’s main roads. The compact center is lies between the Nidelva River and the northern channel and features some lovely older buildings, colorful houses along the river, a ferris wheel, and the StiftsgÃ¥rden baroque townhouse. Cross the Old Town Bridge (Gamle bybro), and run for 0.8 km along the main road to Festningsparken  — an open green space with paths around an old fortress. There are ~1.5 km of of hilly paths here, and great views of the city & waterfront below.

Retrace your steps back to the river, and, staying on the east side of the river, head south, joining the river path for 1.4 km to the Gangbrua Bridge. There are some nice water views here!  Cross the bridge, and then take a short road section to get to the north side river paths through Marinen waterfront park. Head back to the center of town.

Add-Ons: Can combine with other central Trrondheim routes: paths south to Høyskoleparken (park); and just north to the paths along the Trondheim Fjord.
