Bymarka Nature Reserve

There are fantastic trail running options for all abilities in the vast Bymarka Nature Reserve, just west of Trondheim. This 80km² city forest contains 10 lakes, many bogs, and over 200 km of marked trails. In summer, it’s popular for hiking, trail running, and mountain biking. In winter, it’s a cross-country skiing mecca. Many of the trails are lit at night!  Note: trails can be muddy

There’s a huge network of trails, so it’s hard to recommend a particular route. There’s also a lot of variety to the trails — ranging from easy/wide/flat to rugged & hilly. Generally, the trails between Fjellseterveien Rd. & Tømmerdalsveien Rd. are easier. North of Tømmerdalsveien, the are is rugged & mountainous, with Geitfjellet reaching 1365m.

A few recommendations:

  • Teisendamment Lake to Kobberdammen Lake. Enjoy a 2 km loop around Teisendamment Lake, and then the easy Kobberdammen-Baklidammen trail. Can be up to a 10 km loop. See our route there.
  • West of Kobberdammen Lake, the trails are rugged and hillier. For a challenge, run the trail from Skistua to the summit of Gråkallen. It’s a 100m climb.
Essentials
  • 200 km of trails
  • Southern section is less hilly. Northerm section is very hilly
  • Depends on trail chosen
  • There are parking areas at both Teisendammen & Baklidammen lakes, and off Fjellseterveien & Tømmerdalsveien
