The Nidelva River winds its way through Tronheim, where it spills into the Trondheim Fjord. There are some nice paths for running along the river, in two sections: in the Old Town area through Marinen Park, and just across the way in the Øya neighborhood. Overall, 5.3 km, with good add-on options. Note:there are five bridges that can be used to cross between central Trondheim and Øya, allowing for variety/loops.

Start at the Old Town Bridge (Gamle bybro). A path runs south along the river for 1 km, through Marinen Park. A pleasant, green area with water views. Then, cross the Elgeseter Bridge into the Øya neighborhood, a peninsula formed by the Nidelva River. There are some beautiful color houses lining the river in sections. Run west for 1.5 on the paved path along the river, enjoying the water views, to the Trondheim Spektrum sports complex, where there’s a running track at Trondheim Stadium. The westernmost 0.5 km of the path is dirt and more rugged. Retrace your steps, and then continue east of the Elgeseter Bridge for 1 km to the Old Town Bridge and the start of the route.
Add-Ons: Can combine this with our route along the Trondheim Fjord. Access this from the Nidareid Bridge (pedestrian bridge) in the Sports Complex area.

A great way to get oriented in Trondheim. Enjoy the streets of the historic centre, a loop around the hilly Festningsparken fortress park, and some paths along the Nidelva River. 7.5 km, with good options to add on.
A run along a fjord! This is the western section of two routes along the Trondheim Fjord. It's 3.6 km between the Rockheim Heritage Museum and Fagervika on paved paths, with some great views. Good options to combine with other Trondheim routes.
Our favorite run in Trondheim! The scenic Ladestien Walking Track runs along the Trondheim Fjord for up to 6 km, winding around the entire Lade Peninsula. It's a firm gravel path. Great views the whole way.
A fun run combining Høgskoleparken and two scenic bridges over the Nidelva River. Høgskoleparken is a long and narrow park, with hilly paths through its 1.2 km length. Another highlight is Stavne Bridge - a long railroad bridge with a cycle path.
A scenic 5 km run combining Ila Waterfall and a loop around the popular Teisendammen Lake. Longer options to Baklidammen Lake & Kobberdammen Lake, all on pleasant paths in the Bymarka nature reserve.
Fantastic trail running options on 200km of marked trails in this 80km² city forest just west of Trondheim. There are some easier trails in the lakes area, and some rugged, mountainous trails leading to summits of nearly 1400m.
