These two nearly adjoining wetland lakes just west of Perth make for some pleasant running. There’s a 3.5 km loop around Lake Monger, using a tree-lined paved around this urban wetland. The area is popular for birdwatching, and for its great views of the city. Ideal for those who want a quick flat run.
Herdsman Lake
Just west is Herdsman Lake, which is larger and features a 7.7 km loop around its perimeter. Good water views along much of the way, and also pleasantly shaded. Be sure to take the Olive Seymour Boardwalk over the water on the south side of the lake.
Run to Lake Monger from the CBD: We recommend heading west on Hay St. RIGHT onto Hamilton St., then Kimberley St. after crossing Railway Parade. This joins Lake Monger Driver just under the lake. The streets are tree-lined and quiet.

This 10k loop along a paved multi-use trail incorporating three bridges provides spectacular views of the Perth skyline, the Swan River and South Perth’s park land is one of the most popular runs in Perth. Good add-on opportunities.
Spectacular views of the city skyline and the Swan River, beautiful flora, and numerous memorials and sites make Kings Park a must when visiting Perth. Many running options, including landscaped paths along honor avenues and 'bushland' trails.
Another opportunity for some pleasant running along the Swan River, just north of the main Bridge-to-Bridge route. Pass through several parks, with water view the whole way. Good add-on is across pedestrian bridge to Optus Stadium.
A lovely waterside run along the Swan River, west of the city. The route follows the bay for 5+ km south from Elizabeth Quay to the Royal Perth Yacht Club, with paths the whole way. The University of Western Australia campus is a nice add-on.
Wonderful shoreline running along paved paths for 10 km in south Perth. One favored route is Applecross Foreshore, to the Jetty or Heathcote Reserve. Also nice riverside and residential running in the Mount Pleasant neighborhood.
Some good hill running opportunities near the CBD and Kings Park. Jacobs Ladder is 242 steps, and popular with runners. For another hill, add on Mount St. For a longer run, Kings Park is adjacent.
Beautiful park 8 km west of Perth with several km of bushland trails, featuring great views. A highlight is the Zamia Trail, which provides a challenging 3-mile (4.8 km) loop around Reabold Hill.
Wonderful coastal running in this beach area located 15 km west of Perth and accessible by train. Our preferred route is an 8 km out and back to Fremantle, featuring waterside paths and trails. The beach is also runnable. Good options for more in the area.
Nice coastal running on a paved path along West Coast Drive between Sorrento and Trigg, located 15 km northwest of Perth. Nice beach & water views. Can add with marina area and coastal path headed north.
Scenic coastal running on a paved path that runs for up to 18 km between Hillarys and Mindarie. The path is mainly above the water, affording great views. Rolling hills. Can add/combine with path just south of Hillarys.
This large and leafy oasis located 20 km north of Perth makes for a great destination run. 25+ km of trails includes two lake loops, wetlands, and lovely pine forest. We've mapped several route options.
Good trail running in the foothills 20 km east of Perth. The undulating 23 km loop, elevation gain of 300m, has been used as a training route by some of Australia's champion runners. Some more moderate options too.
