Gurten, Bern’s local mountain, is a center of all manner of recreational activities: hiking, trail running, biking, sledding, and skiing! Easily reachable from the city, Gurten is a great spot for trail running suiting all abilities, with terrain ranging from mountain meadows with fantastic views to more wooded trails. This map provides information on the numerous trail running options. The Gurten funicular is 15 minutes from central Bern using the #9 streetcar. Gurten Information

The best bet for running is to take the funicular to the summit, and enjoy some of the trails there. There are six marked routes. The easiest, and very runnable, is Route #1 — a 3.2 km loop around the summit. Great views! Many of the other routes are descents (or ascents from Wabern if you’d like). Route #4, the Gurten Classic, is the most meandering top to bottom route, 3.8 km. Route #2 is a nice route through a forest.

Essentials
  • Depends on route chosen
  • Ascent is 310m, but there are trails at the summit that are gentler
  • Valley (Wabern) or Summit (run/hike up or take the funicular)
  • #9 streetcar to access the funicular in Wabern
