Kinsale: River Bandon Waterfront

GFDL, CC-BY 2.5

There are several miles of scenic waterfront running in Kinsale, the southern coast town known for its colorful houses and two 17th-century fortresses overlooking the River Bandon. We’ve put together two separate routes, which can be combined for ~8 miles.

Scilly Walk. From the center of Kinsale, this is a lovely waterfront run along Lower Rd. for 0.5 miles (good sidewalk), to the beginning of Scilly Walk — a lovely waterfront path along the river toward Charles Fort. It’s 2.1 miles out and back.

James Fort. CC 4.0: The Speckled Bird

Marsh & Fort Route. 5.6 miles total. This route follows nice waterfront sections of the R506 road from the center of Kinsale. One good option is to run for 1.6 miles to Cammogue Marsh. Good sidewalk and nice water views the whole way! The sidewalk ends at the Marsh. Then, double back for 0.8 miles, and take the Archdeacon Duggan Bridge over the river, and then turn LEFT to run for 0.5 miles to James Fort. You’ll get a nice hill here! There’s another ~0.5 miles of paths around the fort grounds. The return to Kinsale is 2 miles. Water views the whole way! Note: if you include the fort, it’s a hilly run!
