Not far from the center of Mainz, the Gonsenheimer Wald/Lennebergwald area offers an extensive network of forested trails that are lovely for running. The 700 hectare nature preserve features 70 km of flat trails, with a unique sandy subsoil that’s particularly pleasant for jogging. Most of the paths are fairly wide and the footing is good.
There isn’t a prescribed route here. Rather, it’s fun to explore the network of crisscrossing paths, which run fairly straight north-south or east-west. Combined with Gonsenheimer Wald, it’s ~4 km east-west or ~1.5 km north-south. The Schloss Waldthausen castle is located in the center of the park.
