We’ve put together this ~9 km ‘runseeing’ tour of Mainz, consisting of Old Town (Altstadt), a loop around the harbor, and a section along the Rhine River paths. Use this map as a guideline to explore some of the mazelike streets of Altstadt & additional riverside paths.
We start at the the area of the Mainz Citadel and Roman Theater. Explore around there, and the Zitadellenweg path to connect through to the Altstadt area. Continue on the mainly pedestrianized Augustinerstraße to the main square and the impressive Romanesque Mainz Cathedral. Continue east on Lotharstraße to Kaiserstraße, a wide boulevard with a tree-shaded median, leading to the Christuskirche.
From there, continue down to the water and do a ~2.5 km loop around the harbor. For the return, head east on the Rhine River path, enjoying the nice water views. Cut back up toward the Banhof at the Winterhafen park.
