This is the Great Runs guide to running in Wiesbaden and Mainz, two adjacent cities located on the Rhine River in the western German state of Hesse. Wiesbaden, on the northern side of the Rhine, is known for its hot springs, large nature parks, and the Taunus mountains to the north. Mainz, on the southern bank of the river, features a charming old town, with half-timbered houses and medieval market squares. There’s a nice variety of running in this area, with extensive river paths, numerous parks, and large nature preserves.
In central Wiesbaden north of the river, a favorite run showcases three parks, including the landmark Kurpark. We’ve also put together a ‘runseeing‘ tour. Just north of the city, explore hilly trails around Neroberg mountain & the Rabengrund preserve.
Headed south to the Rhine, we have have several route options on the Wiesbaden & Mainz sides of the river, with some good loops using the bridges. In Mainz, favorite routes include a park run showcasing Stadtpark, & Volkspark, a ‘runseing‘ tour through Altstadt & around the harbor, and Lennebergwald with its 70 km of forest trails.
