Park City, located 38 miles east of Salt Lake City, is a popular outdoor recreation area: skiing in winter, and hiking & mountain biking in summer. There are also several venues from the 2002 Winter Olympics. There are some excellent options for running options in Park City.
Downtown Park City to Union Pacific Rail Trail. It’s fun to run the festive, historic main streets of downtown Park City. This route follows Main St. for 0.5 miles, then continues as a paved bike path headed north along Silver Creek. There’s a nice 0.4 mile section along the edge of City Park. Connect to the Union Pacific Rail Trail at Bonanza Dr. ROUTE MAP
The Historic Union Pacific Rail Trail. This is the best longer distance running option for those staying in the Park City area that’s not hilly trail running. The mainly gravel trail runs for 26 miles north to Echo. There are great views of the Wasatch Mountains, canyons, and wetland meadows. Starting off Bonanza Dr., the first 7 miles run along Silver Creek (first 3 miles are asphalt). Miles 7-20 are less bucolic, as the trail runs alongside I-80. North of Coalville, miles 21-26 run along Echo Reservoir and are very scenic. Note: Steady downhill headed north. ROUTE MAP TRAIL MAP
McPolin Farm Loop. Just north of Park City, this is a nice 3.3 mile loop on trails around historic McPolin Farm. Starting off Park Ave. near the Kimball Art Center, run north on mainly paved paths around the farm’s fields and meadows, also enjoying lovely mountain views. Cross over SR 284 at McPolin Barn, and head back south along McLeod Creek. ROUTE MAP
Millennium Trail. Paved cycle path in The Canyons ski area, running alongside SR 284 for 3.2 miles north to Kimball Junction. ROUTE MAP
Trail Running Options. There are tremendous trail running options in the Park City area. Easier trail running around the Nordic Center, and more moderate to challenging trail running on the vast network of trails around Park City/Iron Mountain, and the Canyons & Deer Valley resorts. Also a nice network of trails in the area of the Park City Sports Complex.
