The Medina River Greenway is a relatively new addition to the San Antonio running scene. Significantly improved and expanded in 2020, the 18-mile paved multi-use trail follows the Medina River through several parks and natural areas. It’s a mainly wooded trail — featuring gorgeous oak, cypress, and pecan trees — with a couple of lakeside sections. The trail isn’t right alongside the river, so water views are intermittent. The trail starts at Mission Espanda, near the south end of the Rover Walk, and goes southwest to the Medina River Natural Area. Parts of the trail are a bit monotonous, and can be quite open & exposed — use caution on hot days!

The northeast end is at Mission Espada, just south of I-410 & Mission Reach National Historical Park. Follow the trail, with a brief on road section along Club House Dr. At Mile 2, the trail hugs Cassim Lake for ~1 mile, with some water views. Miles 5-8 are a nice section along the east side of Mitchell Lake. Miles 15-18, from the Toyota Plant through the Medina River Natural Area, is also a nice section.

Add-Ons: At the northeast end, the River Walk headed north toward San Antonio. Additional trails in the Medina River Natural Area.
