Hermitage Foreshore: Vaucluse to Watsons Bay

Creative Commons 4.0

This route along the Hermitage Foreshore in Sydney’s eastern suburbs has lots wonderful elements: coastal views, parks, and gorgeous residential neighborhoods. The full route is up to 4.4 miles one-way, between Bayview Hill Road in Vaucluse and Hornby Lighthouse in Watsons Bay. The Hermitage Foreshore Walk section is more of a hike/easier trail run. For a really detailed description of this route, with some good eating recommendations, see this New York Times article.

Start at Bayshore Hill Rd. in Vaucluse. This first 2 km along the Hermitage Foreshore Walk is the more ‘trail running’ portion of the route. At 1 km, pass the historic Strickland House. The next 1 km is through scenic Nielsen Park. The next 3 km to Robertson Park in Watsons Bay is mainly on residential streets through an upscale neighborhood with beautiful waterfront homes (use Coolong-Wentworth-Crescent roads). The final 2 km to the lighthouse is on waterside paths: Marine Parade along Watsons Bay Beach, and then the S Head Heritage Trail to the lighthouse.

Add-On: Combine with our Waverly Cliff Walk route on the east side — these two routes can be mixed/combined for a long coastal run!
