The paths along Suzhou Creek (Wusong River) offer one of the best opportunities in central Shanghai for a longer off-road run. It is possible to run for 15+ km from the Waibaidu Bridge (where Suzhou Creek meets the Huangpu River & the Bund route) west to the Changning District. We note that it’s not all bucolic, and that there are continual improvements and updates to the paths. There are numerous pocket parks along the route. NEW (2025), the Changning area has seen upgrades. There are paths along both sides of the creek from Waibaidu Br. to the Hengfenglu Br. West of there, the path is most seamless on the south bank. There are a couple of tricky spits where you need to know where to cross the bridges to stay along the path (signage not always good).
A favorite section is the 3.2 km from the Waibaidu Bridge to Jiuzi Park, 3.2 km. There are water views for part of the way. The park itself is pleasant and new, with wooden paths and benches. In this area, there are paths on either side of the river, crossing one of the growing number of bridges that cross the water, some of them still the older, European style bridges.
A good 10k is to run along the less trafficked north side of the water from The Bund to the Chanshou Rd. subway (Jade Buddha Temple is a good landmark). Also in the area near Chanshou Rd. and the Shanghai Railway Station, there is some pleasant running on Yichang Rd. and Moganshan Rd., with some small parks in the area. Tons of hotels around here.
Further west, there are some recent upgrades to the path in the Changning District, to just west of Zhongshan Park.
Add-On: At the Waibaidu Bridge end of Suzhou Creek, combine with
The Bund — the iconic Shanghai route that runs for south for 1.6 km. [note there are also expansions of the Bund paths].
