There’s some fantastic running at the Regional Park of the Salinas de San Pedro (Salinas y Arenales de San Pedro del Pinatar), a wetland of international
importance as a nesting and resting place for numerous species of birds. It’s located between San Pedro del Pinatar and San Javier and covers an area of 856 hectares, including 6 km of Mediterranean coastline. There are many km of scenic trails around reed beds, salt ponds, salt pans, pine forests, a pink lake, dunes, and beaches. Spring and autumn are the best chances to see the famed flamingos! We’ve attached a digital map, and there’s a physical map at the Visitor Center.

The trail map provides good information on the main trails and their different features. A couple of specific recommendations:

  • Los Tarays Trail (GR-92). 1.3 km. Lovely trees. Near the Visitor Center.
  • El Coterillo Trail (MU-9)3.8 km loop. Lovely trees. Near the Visitor Center. Nice diversity o pine forest, colourful salt marshes, dunes and beach.
  • Las Encañizadas Trail. 11.9 km loop. A grand loop, covering the diversity of the park:  reed beds, salt ponds, salt pans, pine forests, dunes, & beaches. A section passes two old windmills and historic mud baths.
  • Camino Quintin. At the south end of the park, this is a 4.2 km paved & gravel dyke path along the Mar Menor. The dyke trail is scenic but a bit monotonous as you run basically along a sand spit. Toward the end of the path is the Molino de La Calcetera (windmill) and the Encañizadas fish traps.
